Bridgwater Platoon Cadet Presentations

Local MP Ian Liddell-Grainger paid an evening visit to the Bridgwater Platoon of the Somerset Army Cadet Force this week, where he was greeted by a Guard of Honour and several parents, as well as by Adult Instructor Serjeant Bill Monteith, a previous Mayor of Bridgwater, and other members of the Adult Staff.

During his visit, Mr Liddell-Grainger was pleased to be able to present a wide variety of Awards to some of the cadets, including HeartStart Certificates to those who had passed a Course in taking immediate action in the event of someone's heart stopping, Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Awards, and even promoting some of the cadets.

The Army Cadet Force in Somerset also offers its cadets a Level Two National BTEC Vocational Qualification, and Mr Liddell-Grainger was pleased to be able to present two ex-cadets, who are now Adult Instructors with the Bridgwater Platoon, with their Awards. Both Sjts Jodie Berry and Craig Angus achieved their Awards when they were still cadets, and were pleased to receive their Diplomas.

After the presentation, Mr Liddell-Grainger said how pleased he was at the Army Cadet Force's initiative in offering such a qualification to it's members. He said that with cadets being able to obtain this award "in house" so to speak, it made them all, boys and girls alike, even more worthy of employment. At the same time, it led to a reduction in the cost of training for the employer, which could only be of benefit to the community. The Course, which covers leadership, man-management, decision taking, problem solving and many other facets of being a good employee, was definitely a triumph for all concerned.

The Bridgwater Platoon, which meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 7pm to 9pm, is based at the Cadet Training Centre adjacent to the YMCA in Friarn Avenue, and has a few vacancies for more cadets. Cadets need to be at least 12 years old and at secondary education to join. Further details can be obtained by telephoning Major Andrew Horsey, the Executive Officer, on Taunton (01823) 284 486 during normal office hours.
