In common with all ACF activities, the Ministry Of
Defence have determined a specific programme of training
relating to signals.
The initial course is known as the 'Cadet Radio
User Course'. This is primarily an introduction
to basic voice procedure and the sending and receiving
of simple radio messages combined with a very basic
training on the setting-up, care and use of the equipment.
This course can be completed within a single day of
instruction and is not recognised by any form of award.
The 'Cadet Signaller Course' is much more advanced
and includes both telephone and radio communications.
Telephone work includes practical knowledge of make-up
and working of various forms of batteries, the characteristics
of cables, cable laying, jointing, obstacle crossings,
fault finding and line recovery.
Radio work builds upon the 'Cadet Radio User Course'
with advanced voice procedure and introduces the more
technical aspects of radio aerial (antenna) both in
theory and practical application.
This course extends over some 50 periods of instruction
spread over two week-ends and should be followed by
some practice training. Success on the course, which
has to be tested by the Royal Corps of Signals, leads
to the award of a 'Crossed Flags' signaller's badge.
Senior cadets, at 4 Star level, who wish to continue
signals training, are eligible to attend the 'Cadet
Assistant Signals Instructor Course'. These are
usually held twice a year, at Easter and in July, at
the School of Signals at Blandford in Dorset. Course
content includes an amount of more advanced aspects
of matters covered during earlier training and instruction
and practice in teaching basic signals.
